Fracture model for cemented aggregates
Aleksander Zubelewicz,Darla G. Thompson,Martin Ostoja-Starzewski,Axinte Ionita
AIP Advances , 2013, DOI: 10.1063/1.4789791
Abstract: A mechanisms-based fracture model applicable to a broad class of cemented aggregates and, among them, plastic-bonded explosive (PBX) composites, is presented. The model is calibrated for PBX 9502 using the available experimental data under uniaxial compression and tension gathered at various strain rates and temperatures. We show that the model correctly captures inelastic stress-strain responses prior to the load peak and it predicts the post-critical macro-fracture processes, which result from the growth and coalescence of micro-cracks. In our approach, the fracture zone is embedded into elastic matrix and effectively weakens the material's strength along the plane of the dominant fracture.
Effect of BaTiO3 Nanoparticle on Electro-Optical Properties of Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal Displays  [PDF]

Journal of Crystallization Process and Technology (JCPT) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jcpt.2014.41008
Abstract:

Ferro nematic suspensions are the prominent materials to enhance the electro optical performance of liquid crystal displays. Electro optical properties of polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) display with the introduction of Barium Titanate nanoparticles have been investigated in this article and it is shown that there is a considerable enhancement in electro-optical response of the displays. The nanoparticles lower the switch-on electric field and thereby increase the optical transmission at certain voltages of the displays. The electro-optical characteristics of the PDLC cells were investigated with a He-Ne laser followed by MatLab calculations.

Additional collection devices used in conjunction with the SurePath Liquid-Based Pap Test broom device do not enhance diagnostic utility

Abstract: After informed consent, 37 women ages 18–56 receiving their routine cervical examinations were randomized into four experimental groups. Each group was first sampled with the SurePath broom then immediately re-sampled with an additional collection device or devices. Group 1: Rover endocervix brush (n = 8). Group 2: Medscand CytoBrush Plus GT (n = 7). Group 3: Rover spatula + endocervix brush (n = 11). Group 4: Medscand spatula + CytoBrush Plus GT (n = 11).Examination of SurePath broom-collected cytology yielded the following abnormal diagnoses: atypia (n = 2), LSIL (n = 5) and HSIL (n = 3). Comparison of these diagnoses to those obtained from paired samples using the additional collection devices showed that use of a second and or third device yielded no additional abnormal diagnoses. Importantly, use of additional devices did not improve upon the abnormal cell recovery of the SurePath broom and in 4/10 cases under-predicted or did not detect the SurePath broom-collected lesion as confirmed by cervical biopsy. Finally, in 36/37 cases, the SurePath broom successfully recovered ECs. Use of additional devices, in Group 3, augmented EC recovery to 37/37.Use of additional collection devices in conjunction with the SurePath broom did not enhance diagnostic utility of the SurePath Pap. A potential but not significant improvement in EC recovery might be seen with the use of three devices. In gynecologic cytology, sampling of both the ecto and endocervix is critical to increasing Pap test sensitivity [1]. Controversy still exists, however, as to whether "all-in-one" broom-type devices appropriately sample the cervix. While agreement has been reached on the importance of sampling the transformation zone [2], concern as to how proximal the transformation zone is to the face of the cervix [3] has lead to lingering doubt over how effective current broom-type sampling devices are compared to a separate spatula and endocervical brush [4]. This debate has been re-energized by the ge
Concept Design and Reliability
G. Cooper,G. Thompson
- , 2002,
Abstract: The paper outlines an approach to concept design that integrates the development of the design specification with multi-objective concept development. ‘Excursions’ are undertaken to explore particular aspects of the design, e.g., reliability, in order to help create a concept that is strong in the salient design requirements. The paper then considers reliability as a principal design requirement. Existing reliability evaluation methods are reviewed with respect to their suitability for use in concept design. The paper then describes an approach, an ‘excursion’, that can be used to improve the reliability of a concept. The reliability excursion comprises a systematic method of evaluation and a reliability analysis toolbox. The research reported is an element of a larger concept design activity that itself forms part of a substantial project on integrated product design undertaken at the Polhem Laboratory, Lulea Technical University, Sweden and at UMIST, UK
Microstructure and Corrosion Properties of the Plasma-MIG Welded AA5754 Automotive Alloy  [PDF]

Journal of Minerals and Materials Characterization and Engineering (JMMCE) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/jmmce.2015.34034
Abstract: The influence of heating cycles during plasma metal inert gas (MIG) welding on the microstructure and corrosion properties of the AA5754 automotive alloy has been investigated. The high heat input during plasma-MIG welding results in a significant modification in the microstructure of the AA5754 alloy adjacent to the fusion boundaries. As a consequence of partial melting of the Al-Fe-Mn-(Si) intermetallics at the partially melted zone (PMZ) and segregation of the high melting point elements (particularly Fe and Mn) toward the fusion zone, severe galvanic corrosion attacks can be enhanced along the PMZ of the AA5754 weld during exposure to aqueous corrosion environments.
Four species of land snails from Costa Rica and Panama (Pulmonata: Spiraxidae)
Thompson,Fred G;
Revista de Biología Tropical , 2010,
Abstract: four species of land snails are described from costa rica and panama. two are new species and two have remained poorly known since their first discovery. a fifth species from mexico and guatemala is illustrated for comparative purposes because it has not been figured since 1877, and previous figures of it are inadequate for comparative purposes. the spiraxidae subfamilies and the piraxinae genera are redefined. rev. biol. trop. 58 (1): 195-202. epub 2010 march 01.
A new species of Urocopitid land snail from Haiti and a discussion of the genus Autocoptis (Gastropoda: Urocoptidae)
Fred G. Thompson
Revista de Biología Tropical , 2012,
Abstract: Autocoptis paulsoni n. sp. is described from Haiti. it is characterized by its large size, its cylindricaltapered shape, its fine costate sculpture on the teleoconch, a distinct but weak circum basal keel and its abbreviate conical juvenile shell. it is most similar to Autocoptis gruneri (Dunker 1844), which is redescribed, and its distribution is reviewed. The taxonomic status of the genus Autocoptis Pilsbry 1902 and its subgenus Urocoptola Clench, 1 935 are reviewed. The genus is endemic to Hispaniola and satellite islands.

An Introduction to the Heavy Quark Effective Theory
F. Hussain,G. Thompson
Physics , 1995,
Abstract: These lecture notes begin with a brief survey of the physics of heavy quark systems. This discusion motivates the introduction of the Heavy Quark Effective theory (HQET) which captures a great deal of the intuition developed. A derivation of the HQET from QCD is presented as well as an analysis of its special properties. The effective theory can be seen to amount to a one-dimensional field theory in the quark sector. The heavy quark flavour- and spin- symmetry of the effective lagrangian is an offspring of this. Other topics covered include the question of covariance of the theory, the construction of interpolating fields for the heavy hadron states, the application of LSZ reduction theorems to determine the (reduced) number of form factors in flavour changing transitions, a complete verification of Luke's theorem, plus the matching conditions between QCD and the HQET beyond tree level. These are an expanded version of lectures presented during the Trieste 1994 Summer school on High Energy physics.
Derivation of the Verlinde Formula from Chern-Simons Theory and the G/G model
M. Blau,G. Thompson
Physics , 1993, DOI: 10.1016/0550-3213(93)90538-Z
Abstract: We give a derivation of the Verlinde formula for the $G_{k}$ WZW model from Chern-Simons theory, without taking recourse to CFT, by calculating explicitly the partition function $Z_{\Sigma\times S^{1}}$ of $\Sigma\times S^{1}$ with an arbitrary number of labelled punctures. By a suitable gauge choice, $Z_{\Sigma\times S^{1}}$ is reduced to the partition function of an Abelian topological field theory on $\Sigma$ (a deformation of non-Abelian BF and Yang-Mills theory) whose evaluation is straightforward. This relates the Verlinde formula to the Ray-Singer torsion of $\Sigma\times S^{1}$. We derive the $G_{k}/G_{k}$ model from Chern-Simons theory, proving their equivalence, and give an alternative derivation of the Verlinde formula by calculating the $G_{k}/G_{k}$ path integral via a functional version of the Weyl integral formula. From this point of view the Verlinde formula arises from the corresponding Jacobian, the Weyl determinant. Also, a novel derivation of the shift $k\ra k+h$ is given, based on the index of the twisted Dolbeault complex.
